Independent film funding strategy, research and project development support

Funding Strategy for Independent Films

I work closely with filmmakers to identify realistic funding opportunities, research potential producers and financing partners, and build the strategic groundwork needed to move an independent project toward its next stage.

Annotated screenplay pages, a production notebook and storyboard cards laid out on a desk

Most films don't stop because of the story.

They stop because the path forward becomes unclear.

  • Funding
  • Producer attachments
  • Co-production strategy
  • Visibility
  • Submission planning

These aren't creative problems. They're strategic ones. I help filmmakers work through them.

01Core Areas
01

Funding

Researching grants, funds and financing pathways that fit the project's stage, country, subject and goals.

02

Industry

Researching producers, production companies, financing partners and relevant industry contacts.

03

Visibility

Helping projects think strategically about press, audience discovery, festival positioning and broader industry visibility.

03Process

Start With Where the Project Is Now

  1. 01

    Understand the Project

Review the current stage, materials, goals and immediate obstacles.

  2. 02

    Research

Identify relevant funding, producer, financing and industry opportunities.

  3. 03

    Build the Strategy

Prioritize the opportunities that actually make sense for the project.

  4. 04

    Prepare

Organize applications, research, targeting and supporting materials.

  5. 05

    Move Forward

Use the work completed to guide the project into its next meaningful stage.

04Selected Project Work

Project work, described plainly.

The Project

An environmental feature developed by filmmaker Peter Gartner, with material in place and no agreed route between the funding, producer and territory options open to it.

Approach

Begin with what the project could credibly claim at its current stage, then research the funding and producer landscape around it before any approach is made. Territory questions were treated as research rather than assumption: what a UK–Canada structure would require, and which elements of the project could realistically travel.

Work Completed

  • Funding strategy covering the routes available at the project's current stage
  • Producer research across companies with comparable environmental and documentary-adjacent credits
  • Producer targeting, including approach framing and order of contact
  • UK–Canada co-production research covering requirements, conditions and partner profiles
  • Project positioning work on how the film is described to funders and producers

Current Stage

Ongoing project work with a focus on funding strategy, producer research and industry positioning.

  • Funding strategy
  • Producer research
  • Producer targeting
  • UK–Canada co-production research
  • Project positioning

Additional project work will be added as engagements develop.

05Approach

Strategy Before Outreach

Not every grant is worth applying for. Not every producer is right for a project. Not every visibility opportunity is useful at the current stage.

The work begins by understanding the project first, then deciding where effort is actually worth putting.

Fit

Does the opportunity actually match the project?

Timing

Is the project at the right stage to pursue it?

Positioning

Is the project being presented in a way that makes sense to the person or organization being approached?

Let's Figure Out What Comes Next.

Whether a project is looking for funding, the right producer, stronger positioning or a clearer path forward, the first step is understanding where the project actually stands.
